Valentine's Day treats

So after months of "researching" cookie recipes and icing techniques this weekend I decided to take the plunge and make some of my own frosted sugar cookies.

I used the vanilla-almond sugar cookie recipe from the Bake at 350 blog. They came out great, they were easy to make and were tasty without being too sweet. The cookies kept their shape really well, my previous cookie attempts looked more blob-ish than pretty heart-like.

I used the icing recipe from the I am Baker blog, the appeal of this recipe was that it wasn't "true" royal icing - which requires specialty ingredients and a lot of prep time. I hear royal icing is very temperamental - even weather can affect it's efficiency.

One thing I didn't know was to work one cookie at a time - I "flooded" three at a time and the icing was really dry by the time I got to spreading it into the nooks and crannies on that last cookie.

The finished product! Not bad for my first try. It took me about an hour to decorate 12 cookies. I'll certainly use this cookie recipe again and again but I will keep searching for an icing that looks good and tastes a bit better. This icing was very easy but it sweet - almost too sweet, and I've got some kinda sweet tooth.

Happy Valentine's Day
