Here are some facts about the metro New York area, this is not intended to taint this lovely city but rather to encourage prayer for this city.
-The New York Times reported on January 6, 2011, that the abortion rate in New York City is about 40%. That means that no less than four out of every 10 pregnancies in that city are terminated. Of even greater magnitude is the abortion rate among African-Americans in New York City — a rate of almost 60 %.
-The New York Times released an article stating that linguists estimate that there are 800 languages spoken in New York City. You are more likely to hear more pure Cantonese speakers in Manhattan's China Town than in most urban Chinese cities.
-Special immigration provisions were made for Jewish people after the Holocaust. Today, New York City is the largest Jewish city in the world, with over one million in New York City and over two million in the metro area.
-Demographics of New York City: 36% of the population was born in another country, 50%of Queens residents were foreign born, 43% of Brooklyn residents were foreign born. For some perspective on the size of these boroughs, if you took Queens or Brooklyn by itself, it would be the fourth largest city in America.
-We think of America becoming more and more secular, but immigrants are coming in and pumping more and more religion into our cities and as the cities go, so goes the culture. Immigrants are rekindling more religious fervor in North American cities than native North Americans.
-40% of evangelical churches in upper-class, middle Manhattan started in 2004 or later.
-The largest Southern Baptist church in New York City is Haitian
-There are over 2,000 mosques in New York City
